The Gear

I figure I will take some time to show you my gear.  It isn't the coolest/newest gear, but it is always there and has never let me down.  I will hopefully keep this page up to date as I get new stuff throughout the next couple of years.

Konic Reel by Waterworks/Lamson

The Konic is the entry level offering from Waterworks/Lamson.  The Konic has been replaced in the product line by the new and improved Konic II.  The body is pressure cast aluminum.  This is a weaker material than billet or solid aluminum used in 'fully machined' reels. The major benefit that this reel has over many entry level reels is that is shares the same drag system that Waterworks/Lamson uses in their larger and much more expensive models.  The drag is smooth, the reel is light and well matched with my main rod.

St. Croix Premier Rod

When I was shopping for my first 'real' fly rod, I didn't have a ton of money.  St Croix offers very well made fly rods at entry level prices.  Over the past 10 years, this rod has never left me wanting.  It has fought and landed 8 pound rainbows in Alberta, bull trout, browns, and brookies, largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike, musky (a 14" baby musky), and more panfish then I care to name.  It takes some leader modifications to present pike flies down to size 18 dries, but this rod can handle it.

I have had one problem with the rod, a guide in the tip section started to peel. I simply ordered a replacement tip from St Croix, $30 plus shipping.  Well worth it as this rod has a lot more life to go.
